This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “six seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
