The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
