The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company Unilever blocked the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he will personally create this new product within a personal collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed through social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for Palestinians due to its colors, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions
The founder stated how he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
