The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
