The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
