Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Yeah, I would be lying if I said no," the governor remarked when pressed about giving serious thought to a presidential run following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

The governor's current term as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

The California governor has stepped forward as a notable critic of the current federal leadership, employing his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would increase the party's House seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has made him a target from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a weekend interview on a major news network. Duffy announced intentions to withhold government money from California and threatened eliminating the state's ability to provide trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," he declared, in the wake of a recent deadly accident in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in fatalities and four injuries.

The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had previously stated he was holding back $40 million from California for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," his administration said in a last month's statement responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we rely on data: The state's CDL holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A recent poll showed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has increased to an average of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an typical level of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom remarked while visiting several key regions that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.

He noted his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The notion that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
