Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The Recording That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in armed forces or security roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to defend and uphold this constitution," the representatives stated in the short video. "At present, the risks to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Angry Reaction
The video message reportedly provoke a furious reaction from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a unified declaration censuring the remarks.
"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our country with great loyalty and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme digital publications and recant his dangerous discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Representatives' Defiant Answer
The officials who participated in the video also published a statement.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who love this nation and took an pledge to safeguard and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president considers it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Our service members should recognize that we have their support as they execute their oath to the national charter and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "Every American must come together and condemn the former president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Further Partisan Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of government members."
He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative replied: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "We see active officials of the American legislature who conspired to organize a recorded statement to members of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the executive's legal commands."
She added: "The integrity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
