The scientist and activist, a bioastronautics research scientist, was onboard the automated spacecraft in Spring 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
