Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I figured to arrange a place to stay when I arrived, however when I arrived, a large conference was in town and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I caught public transport and found myself drifting in the direction of the casino, believing it was a place to spend those hours in a place that was open through the night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for acing an interview the next morning, however, being a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

The world needs more individuals like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared out of place as a woman noticed me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked if I was OK. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she said I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at the Australian National University – which was perfect, given that my the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had from her evening job. I had access to the bathroom and a protected spot and safe to sleep.

Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a young woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider about things like that. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – but still deeply appreciative.

I never did study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
