An Prediction Market Trader Made $436K from Bets Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.

A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity just before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
